Vermicast Tea – Hot Summer Months
Using vermicast tea (aka worm tea) in the summertime is a powerful way to boost plant health and soil biology — without burning plants, even in hot weather. Here’s how and when to apply it effectively:
WHEN to Use It
- Best Times of Day:
- Early morning or late afternoon/early evening
- Avoid applying during midday heat to prevent microbial die-off and leaf scorch.
- Beneficial microbes thrive in cooler, shaded conditions.
- Frequency:
- General garden boost: Every 2–4 weeks
- Stressed or heavy-feeding plants (e.g. tomatoes, cucumbers, melons): Weekly
- Seedlings/transplants: At planting and again 1–2 weeks later
HOW to Apply It
- As a Soil Drench (most effective)
- Pour tea directly around the base of plants to soak into the root zone.
- Encourages root growth and boosts microbial activity in the soil.
- As a Foliar Spray (bonus use)
- Use a fine spray to mist the leaves (top and underside).
- Helps protect against fungal and bacterial pathogens.
- Apply when temps are under 85°F to avoid leaf damage and preserve microbes.
