Meet Chris & Robin Choate of Delta Worms

Chris and Robin Choate take years of engineering and gardening experience and use them to regenerate local soil through vermicomposting and community education.

Meet Chris — Solid Waste Industry Leader & Sustainability Advocate

After a 40-year career in the solid waste and recycling industry, Chris Choate decided it was time to dig deeper—literally. As a civil engineer and former leader at major waste-handling firms, he spent decades designing and managing landfill and composting systems across the western states. His work focused on closing the loop—turning waste into resources—long before the term “circular economy” became mainstream. Delta Worms

But during those years, Chris learned a profound lesson: true sustainability starts with the soil. That insight inspired him to launch Delta Worms, a hands-on center for vermiculture, composting, and soil regeneration in East Contra Costa County. Delta Worms

“Every handful of worm castings holds billions of living microbes that build structure, balance nutrients, and bring soil back to life. That’s what regeneration really means.” — Chris Choate, Founder of Delta Worms Delta Worms

Today, Chris focuses on educating the community about vermicomposting, compost blends, and regenerative farming practices—helping both backyard gardeners and local farms rebuild soil health while reducing waste.

Meet Robin — A Lifetime of Gardening, Learning & Sharing

While Chris was managing large-scale systems, Robin Choate was nurturing things on a smaller—but no less powerful—scale: her garden. A proud member of the Delta Informal Gardeners (DIG) for over 30 years, Robin has cultivated thousands of plants, contributed to community learning, and helped countless neighbors discover the joy (and challenges) of growing their own food and flowers. Delta Worms

As the Assistant Plant Sale Manager for DIG’s annual plant sale, Robin supports local gardening education and youth programs. Her enthusiasm for soil, compost, and healthy plants has made her a familiar and friendly face in the East County gardening community. Delta Worms

“I’ve killed more plants than I can count—and learned something from every one of them. Gardening teaches patience, humility, and hope.” — Robin Choate, Co-Founder of Delta Worms Delta Worms

Their partnership brings together decades of technical knowledge and hands-on horticultural experience—the perfect combination for a truly regenerative mission.

Together: Building a Local Hub for Regeneration

At Delta Worms, Chris and Robin combine science, community, and passion to help others build better soil and reduce waste. Their goal is simple: turn what we throw away into what helps us grow.

Based in Discovery Bay, California, Delta Worms supplies:

  • DW Vermicompost, DW Premium Compost and compost blends for home gardens and farms.

  • Educational workshops and presentations on vermiculture and soil health.

  • Community partnerships with schools, garden clubs, and local regenerative farms.

Every bag of DW Vermicompost and every yard of DW Premium Compost they produce represents a step toward a healthier, more self-sustaining East Contra Costa County.

Why Worms Matter

Worms aren’t just for gardeners—they’re engineers of the soil ecosystem. Their castings improve soil texture, water retention, nutrient availability, and plant resilience against pests and disease. That’s why Delta Worms’ products are used in vegetable gardens, flower beds, orchards, and even local composting demonstrations across Brentwood, Oakley, and Antioch.

Whether you’re a weekend gardener or a small farmer, using DW Vermicompost is one of the most natural and powerful ways to regenerate your soil—and your harvest will thank you for it.
